Causes of Cataracts

Cataracts can be broadly categorized into two types: 

congenital and acquired.

Congenital Cataracts

The exact cause of congenital cataracts is often unclear.

They may result from infections during fetal development, chromosomal abnormalities, or metabolic disorders.

Acquired Cataracts

This is the most common type of cataract and typically develops with aging, especially in older adults.  
It can also be caused by eye trauma, certain medications, or underlying ocular diseases.
